Hello and welcome to the Waffle Zone. My name is Uncle Steve and I am um the guy hosting here and joining me on the line over in Perth, Australia, all the way on the other side of the world. It's daylight, it's nighttime here. Uh got Kirsty Prince on the line. How are you, Kirsty?
SPEAKER_00Hi, I'm very well, thank you. I should think everyone's probably a bit disappointed. It's just me again.
SPEAKER_01Ah no, that's what people that's what people keep coming back for. So you know, you come back for yourself.
SPEAKER_00If they want to hear about who listened to Voyager and Carnival, then they're in the right place.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, if they want to hear about Rat and Pink Floyd, I guess they're in the right place too. So uh well, maybe, maybe we'll see. So um, but uh everything's going good. We've already discussed that a little bit. There's no Iron Maiden news, no big uh no big rock news, no deaths.
SPEAKER_00Adrian Smith's son got married.
SPEAKER_01Okay. I did see some I did see some pictures of Adrian Smith and his son, and I guess his wife, the Adrian Frederick Sfa page had posted some pictures. You probably saw that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Uh uh Natalie Adrian's wife posted lots of pictures.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay, okay. So those were some of those. Okay. Well, well uh what's his name? Uh Dylan?
SPEAKER_00Dylan.
SPEAKER_01Well, congratulations to Dylan Smith. We uh wish you uh wedded bliss. You know him he comes from a good line of of of marriage though, because his his uh his parents have been married for a long time, you know? Yep. Uh Adrian and his wife have been married. I mean, they were married during the uh accident of birth. So well they were married during when uh when Bruce was when he played I think it was seventh son because he had Oh, you said somewhere in time. Oh I thought you said somewhere back in time. I was like, well gosh, I thought it was soon than back in time. Yeah, okay, okay, so yeah.
SPEAKER_00He had a he had a mullet in the wedding pictures.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay. Well, very good. Yeah, that's really man, that's like 40 years now almost. So excellent. Well congratulations to Mr. and Miss Smith and to Mr. and Miss Smith, newly wedded. So there you go.
SPEAKER_00You didn't care, that's why I brought it up.
SPEAKER_01I know.
SPEAKER_00So and and you pretended really hard.
SPEAKER_01And I didn't know either. So but um well, I tell you what, we'll get right into it. Uh uh first of all, I wanted to ask you, did you notice that the last episode you and I recorded together was probably one of the shortest episodes my podcast has put out in years?
SPEAKER_00Because I was on it.
SPEAKER_01It was like 45 minutes long when I was editing it and all that, and I went, holy crap, this is short. But you know, the people we gave we gave them qual quantit quality over quantity that week.
SPEAKER_00I don't think we did, but a quick podcast is a good podcast. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_01There you go. There you go.
SPEAKER_00So if you've got nothing worth to say, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, shut up. Shut up, and yeah, I got you. But that's not what me and Matt usually do. Me and Matt usually just waffle on.
SPEAKER_00So I definitely felt like I waffled and just talked around all the questions and never came up with a straight answer at any stage.
SPEAKER_01I'd have to listen again, I guess, to remember, but uh I don't know if I came up with any real answers either. So but well, with that, I guess uh let's find out what uh Miss Kirsty has listened to in the past week. How about take it away?
SPEAKER_00Well, you'll be glad to know I'm still playing the Smiths a lot. Yeah, because I'm just so happy to be listening to that, and like Chloe's enjoying it and stuff, and you know, I I used to listen to them a lot. Um just a playlist, and there was an album called Hat Full of Hollow that came out in 1984, and it's made up of so we had this radio station in the UK, Radio One, and pretty much everyone listened to it, unless you were a bit older and you listened to Radio Two. Um and it was like all pop pop music all day, all the charts. But in um on a Friday evening we had Tommy Vance that played heavy metal, hard rock.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I've heard of him.
SPEAKER_00And also in evening there was a guy called John Peel who's pretty famous. Yeah, I've heard of him too. Yeah, so he used to play all the alternative music, that's where you found that. And he'd do like sessions, so um it's a just basically a few different sessions that Smith did for the radio.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00A lot of these songs ended up being on albums as well, but in a different uh format a little bit. But um, yeah, so it's a compilation of all basically all the radio sessions. So it's got a lot of my favourite Smith songs, it's got a lot of you know, the more the singles and stuff. Probably don't know any of them.
SPEAKER_01Would that be similar to you know, on there's that one Iron Maiden album where it has like when they did the BBC recordings and stuff, would it be similar to something like that?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, okay, cool. That's the the only way that we can really listen to a lot of those matter of life and death songs live.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, so yeah, it's got this charming man, how soon is it now? Which is like a couple of my favorites. Reel around the fountain. I've played that a few times this week. I've just looked that up. Um I learned something about Reel Around the Fountain is a is a term. I had a bit of a welcome to the pit moment when I read it.
SPEAKER_01Well, uh, maybe it's uh it's your own reward for looking into stuff too much.
SPEAKER_00Looking into things too hard. Exactly. Uh still played it again afterwards.
SPEAKER_02Very well.
SPEAKER_00And a little bit of Morrissey this morning as well. Every day is like Sunday.
SPEAKER_01Which is a good song. Is that like a big is that like a real big song by him?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's probably his biggest song.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00There's a very slim chance you might know it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, sound the title sounds a little familiar.
SPEAKER_00Hmm. I listened to a band that I was listening to all the time a couple of years ago and haven't mentioned for ages. Uh-huh. But Memorial Beach, which is their fifth album from 1993, and I did give this a try like a year or two ago. But it was wasn't really what I was looking for at the time, and then I kind of forgot about it. And I I've gone back in and I guess it wasn't what I was expecting to hear.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, it's definitely not pop. And I didn't know any of the songs on it. Like I don't remember any of them being on the radio or anything. Um bit darker, more of a rock album. More guitar-based. Uh I didn't really look at the tracks because I was driving along, but I was n I was just really noticing how good the band is. It's almost like kind of like if you see a jam band on TV or whatever. They were that good, the musicianship. Dang. Some of it reminded me and I don't really like U2, but some of it kind of reminded me of U2, that sort of style.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Or sometimes it was a bit funky, or yeah. Um I don't think I'll wait another year before I put this on. It was actually really good. It was just what I wanted for the time that I was driving along.
SPEAKER_01You know what that means now, right? For next week. It means if Matt's back next week, he'll be he'll he'll be have listening, been listening to A-HA. He'll be like Kirsty and Kirsty uh influenced me.
SPEAKER_00Kirsty the internet.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_00So the internet it influenced me to listen to Typo Negative.
SPEAKER_02Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Do you remember I sent you that reel because um Danny from Voyager had said that the best, the greatest song ever written, Love You to Death, had turned 30.
SPEAKER_02Uh I don't remember it.
SPEAKER_00Maybe you maybe I didn't send that to you. I'd send it to Bill because I was like, Where's your October Rust review? Yeah. Just turned 30.
SPEAKER_01Ah, okay. Yeah, I remember having that.
SPEAKER_00And he said he'd had too many albums to review and it didn't make the cut, which is fair enough.
SPEAKER_01I think what he meant was he's had he had had too many scotches. That's probably what he meant.
SPEAKER_00Well, I would have been interested to hear his views having drunk Scotch or not.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00He's one of those people that manages to just carry on and carry on to carry on flash of it when he's had a few drinks.
SPEAKER_01Like, what are you trying to imply here?
SPEAKER_00Well, what I'm saying is I get it. Yeah. Uh talking of Danny, been a Voyager, but I wasn't listening to it, I was watching it. Okay. So remember last year when they did their their comeback gig in Perth. Well, they've done a couple of little things, but they this first full nighttime show that they did um at Magnet House, and I was right at the very front. Which means I'm in it from time to time. Yeah, and I don't know how I feel about that really. You kind of want to enjoy it like no one's watching, and then you see yourself like bopping and grinning away in the way, no, it's quite nice because it's a memory of a really great time.
SPEAKER_01Is it a DVD or something?
SPEAKER_00Uh it's on YouTube.
SPEAKER_01Did they advertise that they had a famous podcaster in there? In the crowd?
SPEAKER_00Oh, it's no need, is there? Because there wasn't one. Yeah, there might have been several podcasters who are famous on my level there. You wouldn't know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, maybe that punt road guy would have been there.
SPEAKER_00Nope. Brett News was there though.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay. Matt's buddy. The guy, the guy who outed Matt.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I've got photos with him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um I listened to something that you told me to listen to.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I'm interested to hear what this might be.
SPEAKER_00Any guesses?
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna guess the final cut.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I thought you'd guess the final cut. That's the the one I've been going on about a lot, so yeah, and I think last time I told you I was gonna listen to it, and then I did not.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But there was another album, and you said, and I said, oh, I'll listen to it whenever I'm in the mood, uh, which will probably be quite a long time.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00And and Villa was in this chat, and he said it was good, and I should listen to it, and I was like, yeah, maybe I'll get to it one day.
SPEAKER_01Okay, now I'm really just lost.
SPEAKER_00Well, you think it's the greatest heavy metal album ever.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you listened to Painkiller? Okay.
SPEAKER_00I did. And I'll tell you what's held me back from this, because although the first song is absolutely incredible.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You know, I you know, I can't say enough good things about it. And he's shrieking. He's right up there, up that really high register, and you know I don't love that. Okay, well, if if you don't yeah, I mean, it really fits that song.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But part of me was afraid it was gonna be a whole album like that and it was gonna do my heading.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00But I was like, oh, come on, let's do this.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then you get to the next song. Oh no, it's different. He's not singing right up there at all.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Hell Patrol, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I'm like, oh yeah, Hell Patrol, and then yeah, and then Leather Rebel came along, and that's got a really good intro, and then I was like, oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01Wait, what did you think of All Guns Blazing though? Because that's the one where he starts off with the real high register again.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, no, it was good. Um, I think a couple of the songs on there they sounded like they could be on like a soundtrack from a movie, like maybe there was some sport happening.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00Um Between the Hammer and the Anvil was another one like that. Yeah. I think I started off with the most amazing intro, but then it went kind of I don't know. Like it could be on a sport thing again. Um yeah, it was everything was just so so good until it got to the very last song.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then my hand was just like hovering, because I didn't know it was the last song. My hand was hovering over the skip button. Really? I was like, no, I've said I'm gonna listen to this whole album.
SPEAKER_01So you didn't like one shot at glory, okay.
SPEAKER_00I was like looking and looking. Oh, how long's this gotta go? I can't bear it. I hate the way he's singing this. This is so horrible. And now it's the last song that's like, oh no, the last song that should make you wanna say it should make you want to start it again, and I just hated it. And then I got on the internet, they'd looked up the track list, yeah, and found out that Living Bad Dream isn't the last song on the air.
SPEAKER_01Okay, okay, Living Bad Dream. Oh, okay, yeah. I was thinking, wow, you didn't like One Shot at Glory. Wow, okay.
SPEAKER_00So therefore, I liked every song on Painkiller. I really enjoyed it, and I listened to it again without Living Bad Dream.
SPEAKER_01Very nice. I don't even remember Living Bad Dreams because I I must not have liked it the one time I probably heard it.
SPEAKER_00So no, you probably wouldn't have, it's awful. And I think like it's it's proper heavy metal, isn't it? So I could see why you say that. Like, there's no subgenre, it's not death power, yeah, crop, nothing, it's just heavy metal.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, I mean, obviously, I'm not gonna say for me it's gonna be my favourite, but then I haven't really got the chance to know it that well. Yeah, it must seem like really weird to some people that I like Iron Maiden so much, and I I know like about half the Judas Priest songs.
SPEAKER_01Hey, I mean I get that.
SPEAKER_00But I think Matt doesn't really listen to them either.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he doesn't know a whole lot either. He's but then that's Matt. He's kind of clueless at times.
SPEAKER_00I mean I'll say I must be listening to it wrong because I really liked Turbo.
SPEAKER_01He's listened he's listened to like 20 albums by Anvil, but he hasn't listened to the full Judas Priest catalogue.
SPEAKER_00Well he's been a bit busy. That's a lot of it's a lot of albums. And if you take into account the number of Thor albums, you can see that.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I'm talking I'm sorry, I meant I meant Thor. Yeah, that's what I meant, Thor, and then and then all the Anvil albums on top of that. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00So then after that I listened to What I thought listened to this afterwards. I thought, you know, if Iron Maiden didn't exist, because it'd be very hard for me to not pick an Iron Maiden album. But this is probably for me the what the greatest heavy metal album.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00The Chemical Wedding.
SPEAKER_01Okay, that's a good one.
SPEAKER_00I know, it's not a bad song on that. It's absolutely fantastic. Is that have the Bruce Dickinson?
SPEAKER_01Doesn't that have the one about the the um sailing the seas of the sun or whatever?
SPEAKER_00Navigate the seas of the sun. No, that's on Tyranny of Souls.
SPEAKER_01Okay, okay, okay. Trying to think of which song on Chemical is the one I would look while you're talking about.
SPEAKER_00Are you looking up the track list?
SPEAKER_01I'm pulling it up right now.
SPEAKER_00I can't think that oh, no, no, no. Welcome to the pits on accident of birth. I've been hating that.
SPEAKER_01That's right.
SPEAKER_00I can't think of anything that I don't like on it. I think every single song is top tier.
SPEAKER_01Kill Killing Floor, I don't love love.
SPEAKER_00Um Oh yeah, I do love it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's uh Oh, Gates of Your Rising. I wish that wasn't as I'm not a big fan of that one either.
SPEAKER_00You know why? Because you said I wish it wasn't as and then you stopped.
SPEAKER_01What?
SPEAKER_00Do you know what it is you don't like about it?
SPEAKER_01Uh I don't know. I just don't I don't think I like the melody in that chorus at the gates of your it's it's I don't hate the song, but like I wouldn't skip it, but I don't love it either.
SPEAKER_00So yeah.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, it's a great it's a really good album, though. I mean, you got King and Crimson, Chemical Wedding, The Tower, The Book of Thel. I mean, golly, that's four behemoths right there.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely. Um, I don't know, apart from that, I guess I've I've been like just flicking between things and listening to playlists and generally not really doing what you should be doing if you've got a waffle coming up.
unknownThat's awesome.
SPEAKER_01No, I w I I would rather it be a natural thing. I mean, if someone comes on here and says, All I did was listen to a thousand song playlists this week and every artist was different. Okay, well talk about that.
SPEAKER_00You know, well it was well, because like I think guess when some albums finished, so like after The Smiths, there'd be like say Joy Division would come on next.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um and I listened to Candlemass a little bit, which is a doom metal band.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Because you know the um the band Guild that I saw last year.
SPEAKER_02Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_00It was about this time last year. Um Perth Band, and I thought I'd have because I'd enjoyed them so much. And I listened to the album a lot. Aaron listened to the album a lot, Amber said that it was the best night out, and she's one of their favourite albums. Matt listened to it and liked it. And they will be playing, but they're like fifth on the b bill. It's like a doom festival.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Candlemassa headlining.
SPEAKER_01Oh wow, they've been around for a long time.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and George says a really good live. And I was like, ah, you know.
SPEAKER_01I bet that I bet that would be kind of a you know, interesting.
SPEAKER_00You know, guild are fifth on the bill, but I think I would be interested to see all of the bands. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So you might get a doomy McDoom Bud um appearance there. He you know, he seems to go everywhere.
SPEAKER_00I know, I'm so jealous of that man.
SPEAKER_01I know. He's like the male version of Melissa.
SPEAKER_00Going anywhere. Yeah. So, yeah, that's I mean, I don't really know, but I've been doing a lot of different things, and I can't even remember what they all were, but uh it's mostly Binnersmiths and Painkiller, I guess.
SPEAKER_01I'm impressed that you played it twice, though. That's uh that's cool.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's good. I it it's always just it's just like it's an album that you put on for me, and it's just there's not a bad track on it. Um it's just and it's just it's heavy. It's just there's you know, even you got you know, you got um uh Nightcrawler, which is a little slower. Um yeah, that was great. Night Prowler. No, wait, it is Nightcrawler. No, it was Nightcrawler. Yeah, I'm I'm getting my words mixed up here. Uh and uh there's one of the one song on there that is kind of um what's the ballad on the album? I would call it the ballad. Um uh A Touch of Evil. That's like Touch of Evil is like slower, yeah. So it wouldn't be a ballad, but yeah, it's it wasn't melody. And it's incredible. It's so good. I just I love that album. So yeah, you know, funny enough, like my version that's on iTunes doesn't even have that um other song you mentioned. I don't even know what I can't remember what it was that you mentioned now, but the the the bonus track that you thought was terrible.
SPEAKER_00So the bonus track, yes, uh it was living bad dreams.
SPEAKER_01Yeah I know I've seen it somewhere, but I just or I've heard it at least once, but maybe I deleted it. I probably deleted it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00What up to remind yourself because you must be really curious now how I could just suddenly hate something so much.
SPEAKER_01Well, uh the fact that it's not showing up on my uh uh iTunes means I probably deleted it.
SPEAKER_00So it's iTunes iTunes protected you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they either one or the other. So you have any more albums that you listen to?
SPEAKER_00No, I I think that's it. I can't remember listening to anything else.
SPEAKER_01Nothing else.
SPEAKER_00No, so what did you listen to?
SPEAKER_01Okay. Well, uh some people will be happy to know that uh I listened to a little Pink Floyd this week. Uh but when I say a little, I mean not much. Uh I was a tad bit under the weather again. I mean, I've I've been healthy for the last 25 years. Since I've been married, I've been mostly healthy, but she's like the past couple of months I just keep getting little things going on. It's really weird.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I I guess one of them's age. Put you at a bit of a yeah, who knows? Maybe one of the bugs has just like Yeah, I don't know. Made you a little bit fragile.
SPEAKER_01Uh I am a fragile, I am fragile. You met me in person. I'm fragile. So uh so I didn't listen to as much this week. I had a day or two where I just barely played anything. Uh, but I did I started out the week uh listening to the final cut again. And uh I I wanted to share a little bit of a different opinion on this because I've um I've messaged Bruno about it and things like that, and I've I've talked it up really a lot. And uh but in my mind, I feel like listening to it, and I've read and I've read some stuff. Uh Bruno sent me uh something he had written about it years ago uh in publication, and I can definitely understand how like maybe a Pink Floyd fan would have listened to it back then and just been like man, this isn't what I want from Pink Floyd. It could be I can see how someone could see it it's a bit much, you know, as far as what it is compared to what you've been getting all those years. And there's a lot of good stuff on it. I mean, I still think it's a great album, but I did I I do looking at looking at it just from a different point of view, I could see how some fans would go, yeah, you know, I mean
SPEAKER_00Yeah, when you're excitedly waiting for the next album.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and and usually, I mean, up well, before The Wall, I mean, David Gilmore sung a vast majority of the material. And then you get The Wall, which is uh you know, percentage wise, it's heavily in the favor of uh Waters on that album, and then you get this album, and it's every everything is sung. Waters sings on every single song, and uh Gilmore only has one vocal on the entire album. Now he's got like I said, he's got some really great guitar solos, but I'm sure a fan would have I don't know what a fan would have thought back then. You know, it's it's and I've I've listened to interviews from that time, read a lot from about that time now, and it was a very tumultuous time in the band, obviously because they had fired the keyboard player. You know, he would that's the only album in Pink Floyd's history that the keyboard player did not play on, so uh Rick Wright, he had he didn't play on that, and um So it's you know I could see how it would be an interesting album and a divisive album possibly too. But uh I did listen to it once and there was another like I think one of those days where I didn't listen to much, I just thought, you know, I'll let me let me find something else by Pink Floyd to listen to, and I kind of looked and I thought, okay, here's what I downloaded to my phone. If I downloaded it to my phone, I must have you know liked it more. Because usually if I don't I'll I'll I'll add it and then if I don't like it as much, then I'll just you know get rid of it because I got gas.
SPEAKER_00Sometimes I just download things because I I get around to that one day. Right. The final cut.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and I did see it and I thought, okay, I know I've played it before, and it's one of the older things, and and I read the description of it. It was the first full album after um Sid Barrett was completely gone with with I guess without him, they said it was a big change and all this, and it's also a movie soundtrack, so uh it was called the film. I guess the album's called More. And in the and in parentheses it says original film soundtrack. And I listened to it and I just thought, why did I download this on my phone?
SPEAKER_00Uh because you were Yeah. If you hadn't listened to it, maybe it was like, oh get to that, I'll do that one.
SPEAKER_01Well, no, no, I I know I'd I've played I've played through everything at least once, and and some of it there's just a lot that you know you you go, okay, there was there was some stuff on it I did like, and there might have been a a song or two on there that I was thought, well, this is okay, but I just didn't really because parts of it definitely sound like just movie music or something, I guess just a soundtrack.
SPEAKER_00So did you research the uh movie?
SPEAKER_01I looked up the movie and it's it's by some Iran Iranian director. And um I tried to find it and I I just got really bored really fast trying to find it, and I started because I everything I could find on um YouTube was d stuff about the director. And I just thought, yeah, I don't really I just I I didn't care really. Yeah, I mean, I would like to know. I might I might look into that because I thought it might be interesting to see it if it's but but speaking of movies. Yes, there is a movie coming out this week that Villa in Finland and I are very excited about.
SPEAKER_00It is called uh the only movie that you've been excited about for years by burning ambition coming out this year.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Well, I I was kind of excited to see that. It was a little exciting. But this is like as long as I've been a, you know, uh as as a kid, you know, as a teenager, as a I I used to watch uh Looney Tunes, you know, cartoons uh with you know Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck and Mine and Villa's absolute favorite. And I might add in uh I think Bruce Dickinson's favorite as well, uh Wiley Coyote. And um this movie, I just saw a clip of it on Twitter like last night, and we're recording this on Sunday, so Saturday night I saw this, and I was like, what is this? And it said Coyote versus Acame, and I just thought I I didn't even try to envision what the movie might be about. I just thought, oh my gosh, this is a real movie. It said in theaters on August 28th, I'm like, oh my gosh, that's this weekend coming up. So I watched a clip of it based on the print. I watched the trailer. I did watch the trailer, you know, I almost didn't, but then I just thought, you know what? I was showing it to somebody, uh I was showing it to somebody this morning, and uh um and I watched it and I thought, as a fan who's you know, he's always buying Acme products and they always fail in some weird way, and then you watch it and he's kind of seeing like an infomercial, like, have you ever bought an explosive thing? And then when you press it down, it blows up in your face, and he he's kind of sitting there and he kind of starts turning around, like, wait a minute, that sounds familiar. And I just, you know, he's trying to, he's gonna take Acme the company to court. I just thought it's kind of a funny premise to me, and it to me, really honestly, anything with Wiley Cody in it.
SPEAKER_00I do love the Roadrunner cartoons. Yep. Um, I was dismissive of it only because, like, whenever anyone gets excited in a Patreon chat, we're like, oh, that's awful. Oh, I have no interest in poo-poo all over everything.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_00Sorry, that's why that's just why I'd said it.
SPEAKER_01That's why my next immediate comment was, hey, does anyone else want to record with me tonight? Villa sent me a private, he sent me a private message, he goes, Man, I wish I could record with you, man. I'm so sorry. I go, Yeah. I said, No, I was just irritated at her comment. Uh but um but either way, uh, I am excited to.
SPEAKER_00It's it's like a mix of live action, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it looks it looks kind of like that. Like he's a cartoon and this, and then yeah, the rest of it's and you know, I mean, I'm not usually into something like that, but I'm just like, just for like I because I was standing there uh talking to Vanessa earlier, and on my dresser, there's a button, like a literally, it's a Wily Coyote button just button just sitting on my dresser. It's been there for years, and I I held it up and I showed her. I go, maybe I'll wear this button when I go to the movie on Friday. And then I picked up one of my stuffed animals. Maybe I'll bring this stuffed animal with me to the one of my Wiley Coodies. I just got you know random stuff. I've always just liked it. And she was like, Well, what kind of drew you into Wiley Coyote as a character? And I'm like, I really don't know. But it was just I said-yeah, it's funny, but you know, I've I've always and even in that little clip, you know, there's the thing where they show him use that thing on the roadrunner, and then he turns around and he gets that truck to run over him or whatever. I was just like, I said, this looks good. I said, I'm probably gonna go see this as soon as I get off work on Friday night. And she goes, you gotta be kidding me. Like, no. You know, this is just it's just a a fun thing, you know, and I want to be supportive of it. And because I don't know if you saw well, I know you saw this because in in our usual, you know, you're you're one of your favorite uh uh broadcasters uh that you usually pay attention to uh on our little segment called Friday Nights with Chip. He posted that the he's and you know he has a he's kind of a Hollywood guy, Chip is, you know, with his connections, and he said that that they almost didn't even release this movie. They said it was unreleasable or something, and I was like, all the garbage they keep releasing Spider-Man movies and Batman movies and Avengers movies, and they've already released so many of them, and they can't just put something like this out, so many dumb movies they put out. But I get it, I do get it. But man, I am really excited about it. I wanted to at least uh mention it if anyone because I didn't hear about it until yesterday. And I told Sarah last night, I go, how did you not tell me that this movie was coming out? And she goes, What movie? And I showed it to her, she goes, I've never even heard of that. And I was like, Okay. But I liked it on it. It was one of those deals on Twitter where it said, if you like this, we'll give you updates about the movie or something like that. And but yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing it. I I'm a I I've always considered if I was gonna get a tattoo that one of my tattoos would absolutely be Wiley Cody. So okay, so let's get back to what I listened to this week.
SPEAKER_00I'm glad you're excited. I'm guessing you're going on your own.
SPEAKER_01Uh probably, yeah. I mean, I don't I might go with somebody. I don't know if anyone I don't know of anyone that wants to go. I mean, unless Villa can fly in, you know. Maybe Villa, it's Tuesday when you're hearing this.
SPEAKER_00So I know. I wish we could all teleport.
SPEAKER_01I know, that would be so great. Uh have I ever told you about my time machine? Um, okay, so I'll go from a coyote to a rodent next here. I got uh I I did listen to some rat this week. Uh Did you? Yeah, when I got to where I started feeling a little better, like I wanted to listen to music, I was like, I I can't handle anything heavy. Like Pink Floyd, you know, like like I mean like like subject heavy. Yeah, and I was like, I was like, I've been listening to so much Pink Floyd, and I've listened to a lot of rat, you know, more rat than I've ever listened to in my life. Um and so this week I I ch I listened to some different stuff than normal. I listened to uh well, I listened to their newest album, Infestation, and then I listened to Dancing Undercover, which is the one after uh Invasion of Your Privacy, which is usually I listen to Out of the Cellar and Invasion. So I listened to uh Dancing Undercover, Reach for the Sky, Detonator, and then their self-titled album. I didn't listen to the two that I was familiar with since the 1980s.
SPEAKER_00So and I listened to Chip was here to be interested in your rats talk.
SPEAKER_01Nah, it's okay. Um we we got a good fair amount of talking in about rat last week. I I will say this though, I was somewhere today, and somebody I was talking to about music a little bit, and he goes, somehow rat came up, and he goes, and I didn't even mention it. He just goes, I he goes, you know what's funny you talking about you know 80s music? He goes, I used to be friends with a guy, and his cousin was in rat. And I was like, he goes, and I had a he goes, I used to have this certain mustache, and he used to say, You look like my cousin who's in rat. I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on just a second here. Who which guy was it? And he was like, Oh, I it was years. He goes, that's 25 years. I don't even remember who it was, but I just thought, how bizarre is that in my life now that I know somebody who used to look like somebody in rat. So but anyway.
SPEAKER_00There is a claim to fame.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there is a claim to fame. So um I know Matt's gonna be really upset when he hears this next one. And not because of what it is, but why it is. Um, I got a recommendation. Something I wanted to listen to, but I had forgotten to uh download, as we just mentioned, and put it on there when ready. But I remember that Bruno mentioned uh that Stephen Pearcy of Rat had had a different band called Arcade. And I know that I've mentioned somewhere that I actually saw that band live way back then because I had a friend who was a big rat fan, and when that band came to town, he wanted to go, and so I'd I'd go to anything, you know. And so it was it was him and then the drummer of Cinderella, uh Fred Curry, was in that band as well. And they were kind of like a uh what do you call it? A um um what do they call it when the guys two famous guys get together and do a band, they call it a super group? Kind of yeah, it was those little like a little super collab. Yeah, a little collaboration. It was in the early 90s, you know, music was kind of going sideways for those bands, and they were trying to like maybe go, hey, maybe if we get a guy from one band and another, maybe we can draw fans from both sides. And I do remember seeing it live. I don't remember I don't remember thinking it was great or that it was terrible. I don't really remember anything about it other than the fact that I know I was there. But the band was called Arcade, and their album was called Arcade, and uh it felt like the album, most of it was trying too hard to be good.
SPEAKER_00Was there a song on it called Arcade?
SPEAKER_01I don't think so.
SPEAKER_00Disappointing.
SPEAKER_01You know what? Let me double check because I don't want to disappoint you.
SPEAKER_00So well no, it wouldn't be you disappointing me, it would be them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and if I did disappoint you, it wouldn't be the first time. So uh let's see. Or the last. So uh nope, there is no song called Arcade. I what I remember about the album mostly, and I'm sure this won't make Bill happy, but uh the song that I think I thought was the best was there was a ballad. I don't remember which song it was, but I remember thinking it was a really good song, and I thought, and there was some decent other songs, there were some other songs that were decent, but it just like I remember like the opening track was okay, and then I think the second song was a lot better, and I thought, golly, why would you open your album with that one? So I listened to that once.
SPEAKER_00I thought it was the best one.
SPEAKER_01I guess so. And um, let's see, uh, to be influenced again by people. Uh my friend Villa sent me a what would you call it? He sent me a reel on uh or I don't know if you call it a reel, but whatever you call it. He sent me a clip on Instagram, whatever those are called. Is that what I called a reel? Okay, so he sent me a reel on Instagram, and um it was a it was a guy on I guess one of these American Idol style shows where they go up and perform and try to get the judges to turn their chairs around and all that. And it was a guy and he was singing Still Loving You by the Scorpions, and I'm telling you, I got goosebumps. The guy was so good, and I thought, it just and as soon as I got done, I was like, I want to listen to the Scorpions now. So I went and found the album that has that song, uh, which is Love at First Sting, which is a great album. I listened to that, and then I think a day later, I was reading uh comments on I don't know where they I don't know who I was reading or where they were, but it was a comment of uh someone talking about the Scorpions and saying something along the lines of Yeah, they were good up until about 88 when they made Savage Amusement, and ever since then all they've made is a bunch of crap. And I remember as soon as I read that, I it made me want to listen to Savage Amusement because I thought I love the two albums.
SPEAKER_00I'll teach them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But I I mean, you know, who cares? But I just thought, I love those two albums that they put out right then. Like I didn't love them back then, but I loved them when I discovered the Scorpion, so yeah. So I immediately I went to Savage Amusement and I played that whole album and I thought, that's a great album. And then I went to Crazy World, which is another album I love. Uh then I was like, I wasn't sure what to go to, so I went back to uh Blackout because I was it was right there in the mix. Uh and then today, what's that?
SPEAKER_00That's awesome.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I was thinking today I wanted to listen to the zoo, so I was going to play a bit of Scorpions, but I haven't got around to it yet.
SPEAKER_01Ah, okay, okay. Well, great minds are or minds think alike, I guess. Messed up minds think alike, maybe.
SPEAKER_00Uh and it wasn't Philly didn't send me that reel. He sends me reels of people who are really, really bad at the X Factor.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, or or he sends those polka dot people, you know. W whatever they call themselves, yeah. And then of course, not only does he send those to me, I'm in a group with another person who sends them as well. So And I just I usually I might click on the link for a second, and as soon as I see it's them, I just out. Um But I did listen to one other album by the Scorpions, and uh it's a live album that came out in around 95. It's called Live Bites. And um I believe that it had songs which tour would that I don't know which tour they would have been on. Um not that it would m matter too much, but uh I believe it was Okay, they did an Okay, yeah, they did an album called Face the Heat, and it came, it was the it was two years after that album, and they played but there was an interesting selection of songs in there, and it was, you know, I thought it sounded pretty good. And at the end, there were three songs that were all um I guess recorded for the specifically for that album, because I remember the first one playing, and I thought what is this? And then there was even a live song, um, trying to think if I which one it was. I think it was called Living for Tomorrow, and I don't and I remember going, I don't know what this is. I I didn't recognize it at all. But there were three songs at the end that they recorded for the album as well, and I listened to them and really like one of them I thought that's the worst ballad I've ever heard the Scorpions record. Uh another one of them I thought was okay, and then the other one was okay as well. So it wasn't really anything that I th I was when I heard, oh, it's a it's a studio track, cool, until I heard all three of them, and I was like, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Well, you know what you can do if you like some of it and you don't like some of it.
SPEAKER_01Make a playlist.
SPEAKER_00Playlist.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I won't do that though. But um uh let's see here. Um but I wanted to read a com I found some comments. Um I I found a comment about um Iron Maiden, and I wanted to see if you would just agree with this comment. Uh a a general statement about some Iron Maiden.
SPEAKER_00How did you see it? How did you come across it?
SPEAKER_01I saw this on Twitter somewhere. And it was it's it's a it's a statement about uh it's a it's a it's a well here, I'll read it. And you just tell me if you think in any way this could be uh applied to Iron Maiden, if you think it's fair. Pretentious, bloated, self-indulgent, exhausting. Do you think that could be like fair other?
SPEAKER_00Well, I've heard that um I've heard that applied to Pink Floyd recently by Andrew. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01But do you think that that that that someone would feel that way about Iron Maiden, maybe like the later years or anything?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I do. Um I don't feel that way at all. Yeah I I don't think they're pretentious and I don't think they're self-indulgent. I just like Steve Harris's super long songs necessarily know how to keep it tight anymore. But because they don't want to. Okay, well they would say, Oh, we we wanted to see where the song went, and if I can see very well how that might bore someone.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Well I'll be honest, that is Andrew's comment about Pink Floyd, so but I did read that and I thought I guarantee you there's people that would think that about later Iron Maiden, you know.
SPEAKER_00So see how I recognized it.
SPEAKER_01I know, man. You're on in. You're on in. Now I did want to, and I did screenshot these a couple weeks ago because I wanted to address them, his comments. And I and I'm curious, I want to see if you if because to me, it does sound a little like he has a very huge bias toward Roger Waters to begin with. And so that that that probably But he can't he can't even think about liking the music because it's been made by somebody that that shares opinions he doesn't uh uh given Roger uh given Roger Waters' well-known repugnant views, I'd add hypocritical to hypocritical to the list of indictments. Um Let's see, what else does he say here?
SPEAKER_00But I thought um and then he But does he think because I went to see Roger Waters and I was in uh the arena, and you know how big the arena is, takes like fifteen thousand people.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Do you think all those fifteen thousand people are in there uh uh sitting there agreeing with everything Roger Waters thinks? No, no, no. I guarantee you there'd be like maybe one.
SPEAKER_01They're just like going, just shut up and play the music. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00We just went to enjoy the show. Yeah, and then they have to let it bother you. Yeah. If it does, I I respect that because there'd be other artists that I might think I hate them, I don't want to listen to them.
SPEAKER_01Right, right. Well, his final comment though, he had he had added, if only there was much more Skylark and far less Roger Waters on this album. And I just when I had read all those comments, I just thought, you know, that's the thing. It's not that he may or may not, he won't know if he likes the album. He'll never know because he's too, yeah, he's got too much of a here, let me see. He's got too much of a uh pretentious, self-indulgent, exhausting opinion about about uh Roger Waters already, so Yes. But oh and there's one other there was one other thing that uh do you know who um Youngblood is?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Okay. I saw I saw a comment on Facebook a while back, and I screenshotted it just because I wanted to read it also on the podcast. And it said it was like a a picture, you know, with some words on it, and the picture said, You wake up tomorrow, it's 1972. What's the first thing you do? And this guy wrote, make sure the parents of young blood do not meet. And that made me laugh because I what I've heard of him He's just fine.
SPEAKER_00He's I just think he's harmless. I wouldn't be wanting to go back in time.
SPEAKER_01No, I d I thought it was funny. The comment was funny.
SPEAKER_00But it is funny. I feel like talking of that, yeah, Nickelback have got a new record out. Okay, well, I mean And it's it's actually not bad.
SPEAKER_01You listen to it?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You didn't tell us any in your in your waffle stuff.
SPEAKER_00Well, I forgot, but no now we're bringing up people just irrationally not liking people. I was in a conversation. Nobody likes nickelback.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I was in a conversation about that the other day.
SPEAKER_00Was it about how they used to like them, but then I think it it became the thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it became hip to not like nickelback.
SPEAKER_00Like to um I never understood that because we've discussed this before, but yeah, singing songs like Pants Around Your Feet didn't do them any favors.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. What I've ever heard is, you know, I've heard of I mean the only song I can think of by them is the one that says like, look at this photograph and it makes me laugh or whatever.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that that was alright.
SPEAKER_01And yeah, it's alright. I mean, but like what I've ever seen of them is like they sound like they're pretty decent, but I I mean I never got into them. But like when I've heard songs, I'm like, they sound alright.
SPEAKER_00I don't know what the big just a bit a little bit generic, maybe.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but I don't understand why everyone's like, yeah, they're all right, but But why'd it become so hip or you know, but why'd it become the thing to just hate to hate them, I guess? I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I never understood it, but I mean the same things happened with Coldplay, and I'm right on board with that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. The only other thing I I can mention real quick here before we talk about podcasts is uh that me and my wife went to a the Pink Floyd uh Dark Side of the Moon 360-degree audio visual experience uh yesterday, and it was my second time and I thoroughly enjoyed it again. My wife uh she thought it was okay. So, you know, which I was like, I looked over at her one time, it looked like she might have been asleep, you know. So I thought I was just like, okay, I just got to enjoy this. I was hoping to get Sarah to go because I thought Sarah would have really appreciated, like she would have, you know, being a really big music fan, I thought she might have appreciated the music too.
SPEAKER_00So but yeah, because um they sometimes do it at the um planetarium here in Perth, and I've always gone, oh, maybe next time they do that I should get myself a ticket. So yeah, I'd be interested to see what you think. Yeah that will spur me on.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. So what about podcasts? Did you listen to podcasts this week?
SPEAKER_00Or yeah, there was um the waffle last week with chip. Oh yeah. And we've talked about chip and we've talked about like you know, in our Patreon chat group, he is constantly bringing up new topics.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, constantly.
SPEAKER_00And he's not just there because sometimes he DMs me because he thinks it's something that the rest of the group won't get.
SPEAKER_01Golly, that's gotta be really off the wall.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, but you know, he's great and he's such a good speaker.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And he's just interested in anything and everything. You never know what he's gonna come up next, but he's always like just starting off chats, and I our group would be sad without him. Um you just know he's gonna be a great waffler.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And you texted me and you said that you something you said in that waffle might make me cross with you.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00And I said, I'm always cross with you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, true.
SPEAKER_00And then I heard you were talking about the the wall concert, you know they did where the Berlin Wall came down?
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00That Pink Floyd put on. Well, Roger Waters put on. Yeah. You wished Joni Mitchell would have fallen off the stage.
SPEAKER_01Oh god, she was rough. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00No, she wasn't rough, she was absolutely fine.
SPEAKER_01Oh, so you listened to it?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. She was rough.
SPEAKER_00And I'm being nice about it now, saying she was rough. She did you could wish she they hadn't sung it. You didn't have to wish she fell off the stage.
SPEAKER_01Well, it would have at least made the audio better.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, I know you thought I was going to be cross with your um Alice in Chain's Unplugged talk.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, I think I thought you might, because I know how much you uh love that album.
SPEAKER_00I absolutely love it. So when I listened to Bill talking about the Alice and Chains Unplugged episode, I was so on board with everything he had to say. It's like one of my favourite albums, full stop.
SPEAKER_01Team Bill.
SPEAKER_00However, it's not about Bill, is it? It's about the albums. And I know, I know how you feel because we've talked about Alice and Chain so many times together. Sure. So I I wasn't really surprised by that, and if you don't like it, I can understand why.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Apart from you. Well, I did listen to Bill. I better say that now before I forget. Uh he was he did um Australian rock episode, another one of those where he chooses some Australian rock songs from back in the day, mostly the eighties, I guess, when he was listening to that kind of thing.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um and I would uh really recommend because Australia puts out some really great music, and it's only five dollars to sign up to his Patreon. Yeah. It should be even cheaper if you don't live in Australia, I guess. Yeah. Um, less than a it's either it's a price of a crappy cup of coffee.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's like four and a quarter or four dollars for me, so yeah, I pay more for your one. Sorry. And his is probably better.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, exactly. Uh anyway, uh I also listen to Judas Priestcast.
SPEAKER_02Oh, they're back, huh?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they have this guy called Matt. He's got a Formula One podcast, he lives on the Isle of Man.
SPEAKER_02Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00And he's such well, he's on some radio as well, like hospital radio, but still. He's such a good talker. Like you could just let him go, it's like a chat box.
SPEAKER_02Oh wow, okay.
SPEAKER_00So he he's like shit. He was bringing in so I I probably listened to it for about an hour before they really got to any Judas Priest talk, I think. But I was enjoying it so much. Um you know it you know where I love it when people talk about like British snacks. Yeah. So yeah, there was there was quite a lot of that. Um just like a cat that his mum's looking after, that was a really good story. Just everything, it didn't matter. It was just all just so entertaining the way he was talking. It's a really great storyteller. Um we also got to hear about Jimmy Doombutt's holiday.
SPEAKER_01Which one? He has holiday, it seems like he has a holiday every other week or so.
SPEAKER_00Well, I I don't know what he does for work, but I want that job because he goes to he goes to a place, it seems like he works for about a minute and then he just takes off and enjoys himself.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So what happened was he had to go to work in England.
SPEAKER_02Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00And about that time, Paradise Lost, Catatonia, and Opeth, like basically his three favourite bands, were playing.
SPEAKER_02Oh wow.
SPEAKER_00So he got to see them, and I was so jealous, I would love to do that. And um and he met a guy called Aaron Stainthorpe that you won't have heard of.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00He's from he was the singer in My Dying Bride.
SPEAKER_01I've heard of them.
SPEAKER_00So he just met he met him when he was just at the gig and got a photo with him, and he looked so so so jolly in the photo.
SPEAKER_01You mean the guy got to meet Doomy?
SPEAKER_00No, yeah, exactly. And then he went to Ireland. Yeah. And he got to meet Fergal and the Big Mouse. Wow. Fergle and Elaine. Wow. And he also got to watch Freak Pointing, the band.
SPEAKER_01See, that's really cool. I think that's really cool that he got to do that.
SPEAKER_00This is like the dream holiday, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01Golly, yeah. Anyway, like I'd pick some other bands than you know, the first three you mentioned that were his favorites or whatever. But yeah, getting to go see Feck and his band, that'd be awesome.
SPEAKER_00But but yeah, also getting to see your three favourite bands on the same band.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, imagine that. That'd be great.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Uh when they did talk about Judas Priest, there was some painkiller talk, which was timely because I'd just listened to the album.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_00I talked about Painkiller and Angel of Retribution.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the spinner. It was like at least a two-hour episode. Which it probably explains why I haven't listened to that many albums this week. However, it was absolutely worth it. And like I don't care about Formula One at all. But my husband really loves it, and he he's running out of bizaars to download now.
SPEAKER_02Uh-oh.
SPEAKER_00So I I messaged him, I said, Oh, you might be interested in this Formula One podcast. Yeah, just skip around and you'll find it. Yeah, because he has a two-hour plane journey every week, so need something like that. Um listen to Doomy McDoom Butt again. Just because I like coming on here and saying Doomy McDoon butt.
SPEAKER_01Metal Life Crisis?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he literally calls himself Jeff on both these podcasts.
SPEAKER_01He's he's probably trying to move away from it, and now he can't.
SPEAKER_00He can't, no, he's locked in. So Metal Life Crisis with his friend Matt. Um, they were talking about wallowing. So you know, sometimes you're sad and you want to allow yourself to feel sad for a time.
SPEAKER_02Sure.
SPEAKER_00Not put on some music that's gonna try and snap you out of it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00What would you listen to? And what would you listen to, do you think?
SPEAKER_01I have no idea. If I wanted to wallow in it, I guess it would depend on why I was wallowing in it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it depends. Yeah. If you're feeling sad about Aussie, then it's Aussie. Um but yeah, maybe maybe a bit of Alice and Chains would be good for that, I think, too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you could go a little far, you could go a little far, you know. I want to taste dirty. A stinging pistol. Go real fast, you go way too far, way too fast. I want to go that far.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But the odd thing that Matt said, it really surprised me. Um, it was an Iron Maiden album that he went for. Now, have you listened to this? Do you know what it's gonna be?
SPEAKER_01Uh if it was the it was a no prayer?
SPEAKER_00I mean that's a good choice. No, it was seventh son of a seventh son.
SPEAKER_01I thought you said they did the sp it wasn't for the spinner then. I thought you meant it was they didn't.
SPEAKER_00No, no, no, that's for the spinner because the spinners on Judas Priestcast and we're on Metal Life Crisis now.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay. Um yeah, I got lost there. Okay, sorry.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, so a sad album Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, and you know why? Because it's not the music, is it?
SPEAKER_01What is it?
SPEAKER_00He really relates to the story.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00You know, a lot of people talk about how, you know, they didn't go far enough with the concept and it's proper not a proper story.
SPEAKER_01Sure.
SPEAKER_00But to Matt it is, and it's one he really relates to, and I I've never really heard someone talk about the actual story in that way. Usually it's like more in a disparaging way, but he was like really relating to the whole story of what happens to this guy. Interesting. And that's what he puts on. And also he listens to My Dying Bride, um, an album called Turn Loose the Swans, which already the title sounds sad.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And he said it had musical similarities to Iron Maiden. It was like Iron Maiden but on drugs, maybe. I play it, I can't see it myself, but yeah, yeah. Okay. Everyone listens to things differently, don't they? You know?
SPEAKER_01Sure, that's for sure.
SPEAKER_00And of course, doomie suggesting sad songs. You know, you'll never hear anything sadder in your life because that's pretty much all he listens to, anyway.
SPEAKER_01He needs something sadder than sad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so he picked a song called Um Bridges by a band called Warning. This was the doomiest song I've ever heard in my life.
SPEAKER_02Wow.
SPEAKER_00It could not have been slower. So yeah, that that was sad, so that's what he would go for. And also a band called Woods of Ypres. Um alternate ending, that was the one. And this was sad, but it was also like a little bit melodic and catchy, which and I quite enjoyed this one. And the singer's got this really deep voice.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Like the guy, you know the song Mm mm mm-mm by Crush Test Crash Test Dummies?
SPEAKER_01Uh I'm familiar with it to a degree.
SPEAKER_00I can't uh I can barely think absolutely the worst song in the world, but that sort of register.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay, okay.
SPEAKER_00I guess it'd be cooler if I said like Peter Steele, wouldn't it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, something from typo would have been, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, but it was more like Crash Test Dummies sort of register, but it sounded fantastic. Um and then they took some calls from people because they'd asked on Twitter before the episode.
SPEAKER_01Have you ever heard, speaking of you mentioned Pete Steele there, have you ever heard the typo negative version of the song Black Sabbath?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Okay, it's like slower than the slow, you know, than the original. It's the slowest version you could have of that song, probably.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And I I you know, because I didn't get round to listening to Painkiller because I had been listening to a bit of doomy stuff, and it is all quite slow. But I think there's a point for me where it does get a little bit too slow.
SPEAKER_02Gotcha, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And I I think the warning might be that.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00But I called them the warning. They're not called the warning, they're called warning. That's two different bands.
SPEAKER_01Very, yeah, very well.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um I think that's all my podcasts. Yeah, because they were that Judas Priest one was quite long, as I said.
SPEAKER_01Okay, well, let me see. Uh well, last week I listened to uh the Allison Chains Unplugged episode. I haven't listened to any other podcast since then, so um don't have any podcasts to talk about. Put you off, did it? No, it didn't put me off at all.
SPEAKER_00I mean no, you've not been well.
SPEAKER_01When when Bill does, you know, any review, he does a good job.
SPEAKER_00He he's very he's always asking for feedback. Yeah, I and I always think if you don't tell him I did like it or I didn't like it, then he won't he wonders whether he's just talking to the air.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and and I do think he does a really good job. I I don't he made a comment on um he might have made the comment uh somewhere on Twitter that and he tagged me and um the aforementioned Jeff and said that all we ever did was slag his choices of of albums to review, and I was like, well, whether I like the albums or not, when I do listen, it and it's been a while, obviously, because I've had some time where this year's been a little different for me, but um I always think he does a really excellent job.
SPEAKER_00I mean he presents sometimes when it's a bad album, it's absolutely you know, if he also doesn't like it, and it's absolute gold. Yeah, yeah, if he doesn't like it, but he seems to like it.
SPEAKER_01He likes so many bad albums though.
SPEAKER_00The story of what he was doing at the time when it came out, and yeah, what the memories that it brings back for him, that's where the gold is.
SPEAKER_01Well, I will say this too. Um, because when I saw he did the Alice and Change the plug, I was like, oh man, this is gonna be great. He's gonna unearth some information that I've never heard before about that, which I don't know, like he mentioned, there probably wasn't much left to unearth after um yeah the uh Quinn. Yeah, after he had done that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so so he just directed everybody to end volume for all if you want to know about this.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, if you want to he did a really great series.
SPEAKER_00Um he did a series on correct some to the episode we did about Ellison Chains, no. Uh I mean me and always go and listen to M Volume for All.
SPEAKER_01Listen, Kirsty and I did a what did we do?
SPEAKER_00You and I have done Facelift versus Dirt. And a review We've done Rainier Fog. Rainier Fog.
SPEAKER_01Have we done um Black Gives Way to Blue? Did we do that?
SPEAKER_00No, no, that's all we've done because we did do the EPs.
SPEAKER_01And it and I didn't record it yet.
SPEAKER_00You hadn't pressed record.
SPEAKER_01So I'll never the the Kirsty since Kirsty was there, it'll never be forgotten. I was really disappointed. I was really disappointed about that.
SPEAKER_00I know. So Because that that was probably it was impromptu as well.
SPEAKER_01We weren't we weren't really planned for it, and it was just like, let's just do that. So but uh well we can go and uh I can read the because all that came out last year was uh last year, last week was a waffle zone. And um I can read the people that retweeted it and some of the quick troats here, and and then we can uh let people get on with their miserable lives. So because if they're listening to us, it must be a miserable life. If this is hell if this is bringing you up, then my god, where are you coming up from?
SPEAKER_00Maybe they're just listening to it so they can wallow.
SPEAKER_01Or exactly. Or maybe they just want to feel better about themselves, you know?
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, at least my podcast's better than this one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, at least my life is not as bad as this, yeah. So okay. So last week we had the waffle zone. And um it says this week on the waffle zone. Did did anybody catch my um uh you didn't mention it, so did you catch what I did with the uh quit quote when I re when I made it?
SPEAKER_00I can't remember what your quit quote was.
SPEAKER_01I'll read it. I'll read the whole thing. Um and you tell me if you notice anything here. Can I play with madness? Have a good time. I listened to music. Pink Floyd, if you must know. Is my guest a good substitute? 666, 7 Ways to Win. Eight, movie podcasts, nine, Alice and Chains unplugged to talk, and ten, Ace Sings the Cure.
SPEAKER_00Hmm. Okay, well I'll just What did you do there? It looks like you're putting some answers. I made a little acronym.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I made a little acronym, and if you use the acronym for the first four, in the first three of my fifth one, it tells you who my guest was. It says Chip is my guest. And then I just I was like, how can I just say it? I thought, because surely someone will catch. I thought if anybody, I thought you would be the one to catch it. So that means nobody probably thought no one looked at it that hard. So but yeah, I kind of wondered if uh if anyone had had kind of thought that maybe. So let's read the let's see the uh the reposts really quickly here were done by probably the usual suspects, and thank you, by the way, to each one of you, because I always appreciate it. Um his royal dudeness, Dave in the USA, Jesse the Riffweiser in Illinois, Gen Mar Yutani in Shiba, Japan. I guess the um the the queek quote champion of the world around here. The holder, holder of the world record for the longest queet quote in the history of mankind.
SPEAKER_00Please don't anyone else try and break it.
SPEAKER_01God, yeah, I know. Um our friend in Finland, Kirsty.
SPEAKER_00Hey, fella.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Uh the official hopeless romantic of the podcast, the Rocca Rola in Idaho. Uh Thane of the Woods in um Indiana.
SPEAKER_00I'm in.
SPEAKER_01I'm at Hammond! That's right. Um Outback Mark in Alice Springs, and lastly, Kirsty. See if you're still paying attention. Silent Kev in Alice Springs.
SPEAKER_02Kevin, I know you never said wacky.
SPEAKER_00I have to say this.
unknownThat's wacky.
SPEAKER_01There you go. All right, and we got a few quiet quotes here. We got four or five of them, it looks like. And starting off with one of the favorite, your favorite names that I used to never read on here.
SPEAKER_03Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01Uh Doomy McDoombutt. And let's Jeff. Jeff from the Metal. Oh, Doomy McDoombutt. There you go.
SPEAKER_00Thank you.
SPEAKER_01And he said, Waiter, there's a hair-there's a lot of hair in my waffle. The hair metal talk, get the hair metal talk gets so torturous. I get excited about Pink Floyd talk. Thirty minutes later, I'm now hating all the Pink Floyd talk. Well, at least, you know, at least we figured out how to get him interested in Pink Floyd.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I don't know why he listens if it's He hates everything.
SPEAKER_01I hate you know what? He's wallowing. He's wallowing. That's what it's what it is. And then he said, Oh gosh. Steve needs to do a whole night of karaoke in the ace voice.
SPEAKER_00Oh well, you you know, Deamie, there's actually a Patreon level where you can have that happen.
SPEAKER_01Well, no, you get to you get one song.
SPEAKER_00Not all of 'em, but you know, it it it would have to be sure they could be a Patreon level where you do the whole thing.
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh. Yeah, do it.
SPEAKER_00Add another tier.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I can s I can imagine that.
SPEAKER_00I'd have to do it times the current one's so popular.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I know, since nobody signed up on that one. I'd have to do it like times eight, though. Because if I do eight songs and I all gotta be like ace, you know, I might get beat up by somebody because they might think I'm making fun of, you know, somebody they know, maybe. I don't know. If you know what I mean. So and if you know, you know. Next up is Kirsty Prince in Perth, and she says, if you're in the Patreon group, you'll know that Chip Ross is always coming up with new and random topics of conversation that keeps us all entertained, especially on Friday nights. Now he brings some of that gold to the waffle, and he really did. I mean, it was just rant like he's I was he started off with a TMZ topic about some actor that died, you know, and I was just like someone I I the only way I've discovered who it was, like, or found a connection to it was I guess her brother was an actor and he had died a few years ago, and I remember Sarah telling him about him because he was a uh Disney actor or something, so that's the only connection I have to either one of them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's like he just suddenly he must have been like watching looking at Twitter while he was talking to you to suddenly blurt that out.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't yeah, I'm not sure if it had happened.
SPEAKER_00I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't know if it happened a tad bit earlier or what, but I just yeah, I didn't I mean I didn't know anything about it or who it was, so um the next one is from Gen, and Gen, I think he went on AI and he got he he got a uh a thing made that says Uncle Steve, genius musicer. And it and as you can see if by looking at your phone, Kirsty, if you hadn't already seen it, there's already seen it. There's a guy standing there that looks nothing like me, with a cigarette in his mouth, but his mouth is wide open, so I don't know how the cigarette's still in there. And he's playing, you know, thankfully he's playing like a an Ace Fraley, Les Paul guitar, you know, what and it just you know, a couple of Marshall stacks behind him and the drums. You can see the drummer and the bass player back there, and there's a crowd, they're all cheering on Uncle Steve, the genius musicer. So I thought that was kind of funny. Uh, then there's another one from Gen Mario Tani. And uh I believe he he did this one today. So I don't know if you've seen this one or not.
SPEAKER_00I checked how many um how many tweets it took up. I think you were right today.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, oh yeah. So he says, There were quite a few interesting conversations between Uncle Steve and Chip. I could not care less about glam metal talk, but there was an interesting discussion about Judas Priest's most renowned albums, Screaming for Vengeance and Defenders of the Faith. Screaming for Vengeance is perhaps their most monumental album to this day. It opens with the Hellion Electric Eye, which has become a cliche opener for many metal bands, a short instrumental track followed by an uptempo solid metal track, which it's it's because it's obviously incredible, really well done. With British Steel, they stripped away all of their more dramatic, somewhat progressive 70s hard rock and ballads, creating a new, more precise and solid metal sound. With point of entry, they attempted to reach a more radio-friendly sound, but it fell short. With screaming for vengeance, they pushed their metal sound to be faster and more aggressive while also bringing back that dramatic 70s essence. Songs like Take These Chains, Pain and Pleasure, and Fever are great examples of that 70s throwback. While tracks such as Riding on the Wind and the title track are more aggressive than anything they'd done before. That's why most fans call this their favorite priest album. However, my personal favorite. Hold on, I gotta see how much farther this is going. I'm running out of it.
SPEAKER_00It's not that it's not that long. You're all right.
SPEAKER_01I'm running out of um saliva.
unknownI can do it.
SPEAKER_01If I did that other one, there's no way I can't make it through this one.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01However, my personal favorite is Defenders of the Faith. I totally agree with Steve on heavy duty Defenders of the Faith. They shouldn't have included those two songs. Yet I still prefer this album over any other priest record. Even though Screaming for Vengeance was a mix of aggressive metal and a return to their dramatic 70 sound, those elements were separated into different songs. Defenders of the Faith, on the other hand, blended those two essences within single tracks. While they still delivered aggressive tracks like Free Will Burning and Jawbreaker, you can hear the dramatic essence fused with their solid metal sound in Rock Hard, Ride Free, and The Sentinel. These those songs have so many transitions, tempo changes, and distinct sections, yet they pack them all into tight five-minute package. Now I agree, that's really they did a great job with that.
SPEAKER_00I consider both Ben's telling me to listen to these albums next.
SPEAKER_01Obviously, yeah. Uh I I consider he says, I consider both Priest and Maiden to have very dramatic sounds, but one stuck to a four to five minute structure while the other leaned into longer, more progressive styles. Love Bites is another fascinating song that hinted at their next album. It was their first track to use a guitar synthesizer. I know many fans freaked out when they released Turbo, but in my opinion, Priest has always hinted at their future direction in previous albums. Living After Midnight hinted at point of entry, Hard as Iron hinted at Painkiller, Lochness hinted at Nostradamus, and Love Bites hinted at Turbo. Golly, this dude is too smart, you know? The only abrupt shift they ever made was probably Jugulator, which is one of the Ripper Owens albums. Anyway, for me personally, this album is the ultimate blend of their 70s sound and early 80s metal sound, and the Sentinel is the absolute perfection of that vision. Now we'll give them that. The Sentinel is absolutely incredible. Uh and the version, the definitive version for me is the one on Priest Live.
SPEAKER_00Cool. Alright, so next up, we remember when um Twitter had a limit of 140 characters.
SPEAKER_01Well, you gotta pay, you gotta pay to get what Gen's getting, I think.
SPEAKER_00I think so.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he got the check mark next to his name. So next up is uh last week's guest host, Chip Ross. Uh one of his two quiet troats, I believe. First one very fun to talk metal. Maiden, rat, crew, typo negative, and hard rock, Allison Chains, Pink Floyd, and more on a Sunday night with everybody's favorite uncle. Okay, I'll take that. I always tell people that, you know, tell you like when I talk to you, tell your kids your favorite uncle said hi. Or just their uncle, yeah. Uh, and he said, believe it or not, we were both sober. So that is a hard one to believe, I guess there could be.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it didn't really come across that way.
SPEAKER_01Well, thanks. Now, next up, I gotta say, this is from somebody that I haven't heard from or seen on here in a while, and I was very happy to see this person make a uh an appearance again. Uh and it maybe he's busy working on the uh Matt biography, you know. But uh Simi in France makes an appearance, and he says, Great waffle with a very cool guest. Regarding the final cut, I never understood why this album is so much hated by some. It's not my favorite by any means, but it's still a very sentimental and well put together album. And I do agree. One thing that David Gilmore said about it was that there were leftover tracks, and um that he he had told uh Roger Waters, if they weren't good enough for the last album, why are they good enough for this album? And uh, but he did say that he thought the album was very, very well produced, and I do agree with that. It sounds really good on a on headphones or a good stereo system. Like I kind of like I told you about some of the things, just the sound effects that come along at times, and man, it's just it's so well done.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's like killers, hey? The band or Iron Maiden album.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's well produced, I'll give it that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, one of the one of the best produced albums, and you always call it leftovers.
SPEAKER_01Oh well, yeah, I mean it was it was it was definitely leftovers, most of it. So we and we all know this. You know, we all know that he left those songs over to be on the second album. And I will say, I'll just add one little caveat here about killer since you brought it up. That collection of songs does go well together, like they all kind of fit together, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00Yes, I do. So say that.
SPEAKER_01I I would say that the first two albums were each that the songs chosen for each album worked well within the the realm of the album they were on together. So I can't believe that. I said something kind of nice.
SPEAKER_00I know, rare positive statements.
SPEAKER_01You know, I am I am a hater of uh all things fun around here usually, but uh the enemy. The enemy of fun.
SPEAKER_00The enemy of fun. Yeah, I'm in shock now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I know. He'd be speechless here. So okay, next up is Ballad in uh Ireland, and he says, uh, where does he live? Limerick. In Limerick, Ireland. That's where he's pretty close to. Out in the middle of nowhere, as uh I said when I was trying to find it one day. Bill says, uh Bill, Ballad says, you maybe you'll see uh there's a word in here that has that has the word Bill in it that I was looking at too.
SPEAKER_00Uh okay.
SPEAKER_01Ballad says Chip does a reverse Beverly Hill Billy's. A New Orleans here no New Orleans here I come. I hope Matt is doing metaphorical press-ups as the bar has been raised again. Hashtag guest performance anxiety.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's what he said.
SPEAKER_00Typical ballad.
SPEAKER_01Typical ballad, yeah. Alright, and so uh next next one here again is from Chip Ross, and he says, On last week's waffle, I forgot to share that I've been listening to Art Bell Parodies. I was a huge fan of Coast to Coast AM in the 90s slash 2000s, as I bet many of you were too. I know that, um, I know that um the Riffweiser. I know he's a big fan of Art Bell, so maybe he knows, and he put a link on here, which I haven't clicked on or anything, and I'm not going to right now. But um I believe there's one more. I'm gonna double check before before I after I end this one here. But uh this one is from Outback Mark in Alice Springs. And I know uh uh send my love, send everybody here's love to Outback Mark, because he's he's kind of going through it right now with some stuff, and uh I was really happy to see that that he well to coin a little phrase off of his uh quick show here that he chipped in this week, given everything going on. What what do you think the first word's gonna be, Kirsty?
SPEAKER_00If it's not well, I'll be very disappointed.
SPEAKER_01If it's not well, then it's probably not even from him.
SPEAKER_00I mean exactly.
SPEAKER_01Well what a great wa what a great waffle it was this week, and Steve had a very special guest to chip in and help out. This guest was a chip off the old block and added some welcome opinions. Sure there was plenty of Pink Floyd talk that no doubt gave everyone the chips. And Steve did have a bit of a chip on his shoulder about some of the opinions, but hey, we're used to that. Well done, Mr. Ross, and hopefully you'll make more appearances. Was impressed with how highly you regarded the cure, and I'm sure Kirsty is equally impressed. Is that true?
SPEAKER_00Well, yes, but I mean obviously I already knew that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, well, of course we but at least he at least he was correct on your impress impression. Oh, and regarding movie podcasts, have you listened to What Went Wrong? It's an absolutely brilliant show that dives that deep dives into famous movies and is a must listen. Ironically, they also did an episode on Starship Troopers, which was awesome. I'd be intrigued to know what you think in comparison. Loved the volume and volume for all Allison Chain's acknowledgement. Thanks to the great man that is Metal Bill. Wow. Great man and Metal Bill in the same sentence. Check out the big head there. Uh thanks to him a behema. True. That's just that's the size of his head, though, you know? Thanks to the great man that is Metal Bill. I listened to all six of those episodes and absorbed every piece of their story. Still a bit strange to me that he has no love for the post lane material, but hey, each to their own. Cheers, Steve and Chet. And lastly, Kirsty.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01Cheers, everybody.
